The remainder of this article (if you click "read more") goes into some details of what services are available on the site however, I would like to thank Mel for all his input and testing services which, in the case of the photo submission system, he tested quite literally to destruction!
Everything seems to be stable now and ready for use, so please take the time to click the "read more" link below and enjoy and contribute to the site.
UPDATE: 207 Entry E-mail addresses/Accounts are now available for 207 Entry members. If you would be interested in being issued one, please get in contact with me using the private message system. Accounts can be accessed via your normal e-mail application (e.g. Outlook) or through the Browser E-mail link in your profile menu.
Thank you for choosing to read more of the news article and for visiting the 207 Entry Website.
This project has been an interesting one to do and seems to have become a team effort with Mel Williamson getting stuck in to using nearly all of the different functions and agreeing to be the guinea pig for the rest.
The system has bedded down nicely although at the beginning of next month (September) I am intending to do a critical software update which…if it works… you shouldn’t notice!
So… what is here and what can you do???
Who’s Who!
Most of you who have already used the site have come across this section. It is a good demonstration of the Photo Gallery system and is made up of head-shots of 207 Entry Apprentices blown up from the group photo taken in 1966.
The names were left blank deliberately to encourage people to leave comments about the names, nicknames or anecdotes about those pictured.
This has already appeared to work quite well and although there are still a lot of blanks to fill in, nearly everyone registered so far seems to have got to grips at leaving a message.
You may notice that the box for you to enter comments has a little maths problem to fill.. this is a security measure (not to test your maths abilities) to stop automated systems “spamming” the site through the comments fields. Just solve the calculation before you submit the comment and the comment will post up by whatever you were commenting about.
The Gallery
The photo gallery has been filling up nicely after some early teething problems discovered during Mel’s robust beating of the system.
We now have quite a few photos and documents on show and more on the way. It is very simple to use and upload your own photos to the website if you are a registered website member.
All you need to do is select “submit photo” from the left-hand menu when you are logged on and this will take you to a screen to upload your photo from your computer to the website. Just select a gallery you want to put the photo in, add a title and description and submit… it’s as simple as that.
One important thing to remember: The photo must be 2048x2048 pixels or less and must NOT have any spaces in the file name. Jpg, gif and png formats are supported.
If you have any problems, just e-mail them to the webmaster@207Entry.org and we will add it for you.
Forums and ShoutBox
Mel has kicked both the Forums and Shout Boxes into action and both systems offer the chance to discuss topics with fellow website members.
The ShoutBox allows you to leave a short message to grab someone’s attention and the Forums are for more detailed conversations about particular subjects and allow people to have their say. The Forums also allow you to leave longer messages or even pictures and files to download and share.
Private Messages
The private message system allows you to send a private message to another member of the site similar to an e-mail. It also allows you to send a round-robin message to a whole usergroup if you want to get a message to everyone.
You can even choose the private message system to send you an e-mail warning you if you’ve been sent a message.
Downloads
This part of the site is in its infancy although I am trying to add things as quickly as I find them.
Currently this area is being used for downloadable graphics in Adobe Photoshop to allow other people to have useable graphics to build their own websites to help the Apprentice Web community. BUT… I am also in the process of finding documents to convert to Adobe Acrobat PDF files to build a reference archive.
I have added a PDF copy of the Halton Magasine and hoping to add another addition shortly. I am also looking to add a PDF copy of the “Guide to the “Schools” booklet as well as other period documents as I come across them.
Keep an eye on this section!
Web Links
Another work in progress, this section is hopefully building a database of other Entry websites as well as other useful links.
Like the photo gallery, you can use the Submit Link option to post your own useful links to the site and are more than welcome to do so. If a category doesn’t already exist for what you want to post, just let us know and we will create one for you.
Well…that’s it for now, you short potted guide to the site. More will be added as I get a chance and suggestions are always welcome in the relevant Forum category.
All the best for now,
The Webmaster
